SYFY RENEWS SANCTUARY FOR SEASON FOUR

NEW YORK – January 18, 2011 – Syfy has greenlit production on a fourth season of Sanctuary, it was announced today by Mark Stern, President, Original Programming, Syfy & Co-Head, Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. Sanctuary season 4 is slated to commence production on a 13-episode season in spring 2011 in Vancouver, BC with an eye towards a fall 2011 premiere on Syfy.

Sanctuary follows brilliant scientist Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and her team, who use their unique combination of instinct, medicine and cutting-edge science to find and aid a clandestine population of beings that the world refuses to believe exists. The series also stars Robin Dunne as forensic psychiatrist Dr. Will Zimmerman, Agam Darshi as the quick-witted Kate Freelander, Ryan Robbins as tech wiz Henry Foss and Christopher Heyerdahl as the sinister John Druitt.

One of television’s most groundbreaking series, shooting almost entirely on green screen, Sanctuary was the first television series in North America to use the RED camera exclusively. Its stunning visual effects were nominated for a 2008 Emmy Award.

Created by Damian Kindler (Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis), Sanctuary is produced in association with Syfy and is distributed by Tricon Films and Television. Season three of the series is executive produced by Damian Kindler, Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood, Keith Beedie and Tricon Films.

SPACE Confirms ‘Sanctuary’ Season 4

SPACE Confirms ‘Sanctuary’ Season 4Amid all the doom and gloom over Syfy's decision not to renew Stargate Universe there is some good news for fans of Vancouver-shot fantasy series. Canada's SPACE Channel has officially announced that it is renewing the entertaining series Sanctuary for a fourth season.

Sanctuary stars Stargate alumnus Amanda Tapping (she's been in every live-action Stargate series) as the unnaturally old but still stunning Dr. Helen Magnus. Magnus has dedicated her life to the study of so-called 'abnormals' and is assisted in the series by protégé Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne), Kate Freelander (Agam Darshi), Henry Foss (Ryan Robbins) and Bigfoot.

According to SPACE's press release announcing the S4 renewal, production will begin on 13 episodes in the spring. That's around the time that the second half of Season 3 will air on SPACE. The Season 4 episode order is in line with that for Seasons 1 (which first aired on Movie Central and The Movie Network in Canada) and 2. Season 3 had an extended order of 20 episodes. Season 4 is scheduled to premiere on SPACE in the Fall.

CinemaSpy recently confirmed reports that Sanctuary's production team and Syfy in the US were in talks for a fourth season. Syfy is also expected to air Season 3.5 in the Spring and Season 4 later this year.

Sanctuary started out as Web series and is still a largely independent production. Tapping and Sanctuary creator, writer and executive producer Damian Kindler are among the principals in the non-profit foundation Sanctuary for Kids, which raises money for charities that support children and youth around the world.

TV Ratings: Stargate Atlantis and Sanctuary Finales

TV Ratings: Stargate Atlantis and Sanctuary Finales

Here are some good news for fans of the Sci Fi Channel’s Friday night block: both Stargate: Atlantis and Sanctuary averaged roughly 2 million viewers for their season finales last Friday. If 2 million eyeballs doesn’t sound like a lot, you’d be wrong; for a niche basic cable channel, that’s pretty damn good. Atlantis’ “Enemy at the Gate” series finale episode averaged 973,000 Adults 18-49, while Sanctuary’s first season finale averaged 900,000 adults 18-49.

What that basically means is that Sanctuary has more than sufficiently held onto the departing Atlantis’ audience. This is definitely good news for Sanctuary, which I was afraid might slip in the ratings after its phenomenal series premiere. It now appears as if the show will hold steady, and if anything, may continue to improve. The first season is always the hardest to survive, just ask fans of The Dresden Files. But most of all, I’m psyched for Amanda Tapping. Hopefully Sanctuary will stick around for a long time.

I’m not sure when the Sci Fi Channel plans on slotting their third Stargate show, Universe, but chances are it’ll be in the Friday night time slot with Sanctuary as the lead-in once again. This is no time to start messing with the formula.
